MUSCAT : Developed by students Hanin bint Ahmed Al-Hinai, Al-Zahra bint Zaher Al-Maamari, and Rehab bint Sultan Al-Maamari from the College of Computer Science and Information Technology, the platform uses cutting-edge artificial intelligence technologies to bridge the communication gap between the hearing-impaired and the wider community. The project was supervised by Dr. Marwan Al-Sharaa.
Unlike traditional systems that rely on human translators or limited resources, the AI-based electronic platform enables direct, real-time communication. It features tools like sign language recognition, speech-to-text, and text-to-speech, making it suitable for workplaces, schools, healthcare centers, and everyday interactions.
Team member Hanin Al-Hinai said the platform was developed to empower individuals with hearing disabilities and support their integration into society and the labour market. She emphasized the importance of breaking down language barriers that still hinder access to education and basic services.

Technically, the system combines HTML, CSS, and JavaScript with advanced AI tools such as Google’s MediaPipe Hands for sign recognition and the Web Speech API for voice translation. Student Al-Zahra Al-Maamari noted that users can toggle between “deaf mode” and “hearing mode” for a customized experience — all without the need for specialized hardware.
Currently in its initial testing phase, the platform operates using a small but effective dataset. The team is preparing to scale up with a more comprehensive database to enhance accuracy and expand its ability to recognize a wider range of signs and speech patterns.
Rehab Al-Maamari mentioned that the next phase will focus on improving algorithms and adding more language options.
