MUSCAT – The bulletin addresses the growing presence of electronic games in children’s daily lives, emphasising the importance of safe, age-appropriate use and offering practical alternatives and parental tips.
“In the age of technology, electronic games have become an integral part of children’s lives, but how can we balance fun and health? In this educational bulletin, we share with you the potential risks of using electronic devices, appropriate usage times, and fun alternatives for spending time,” the bulletin states.
The Ministry outlined several health and behavioural risks associated with overuse of electronic devices:
• Gaming addiction, especially among young children, may lead to compulsive behaviour and social withdrawal.
• Visual strain, caused by prolonged screen exposure, can negatively affect eye health.
• Obesity, due to reduced physical activity, is a growing concern.
• Sleep disturbances, particularly when children play late at night.
• Psychological effects, including increased aggression linked to violent games.
To promote healthier habits, the Ministry recommends:
• Ages 2–5 years: Maximum of one hour per day, focused on educational content.
• Ages 6 and above: Limit to two hours per day, with content monitored by parents or guardians.
To help children reduce screen time, the Ministry encourages families to explore enriching activities such as:
• Sports activities such as basketball, cycling, swimming)
• Reading books suited to the child’s age and interests
• Art and crafts, to stimulate creativity
• Outdoor experiences, including visits to parks or museums
The Ministry also shared practical advice for parents:
• Set clear limits on daily device usage.
• Engage in games with children to foster connection and better monitor content.
• Be a role model by moderating personal screen time in front of children.
“Let’s help our children enjoy technology in a healthy and balanced way, while promoting alternative activities that develop their skills and bring them happiness,” the bulletin concludes.
