Japan’s Tokara Islands hit by nearly 2,200 earthquakes

Nearly 2,200 earthquakes have recently struck the island chain southwest of Japan since June 21.

TOKYO – Japan’s public broadcaster NHK reported that meteorological officials urged residents to be on the alert for further earthquakes, which could register lower 6 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of zero to seven.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said that as of Sunday, July 20, approximately 2,193 tremors with intensities of one or higher have been recorded off the Tokara Islands since June 21.

Seismic activity has intensified since June 21 around Akusekijima and Kodakarajima Islands, which are part of the Tokara Islands in Kagoshima Prefecture.
