MUSCAT : The move is part of the ROP’s broader strategy to enhance road safety and reduce traffic accidents by leveraging advanced technology to influence driver behaviour.

According to Brigadier Eng. Ali bin Sulayem Al Falahi, Director-General of Traffic at the ROP, the system is designed to analyse data and enforce traffic laws more effectively.

He noted that the ROP is implementing a comprehensive monitoring network that integrates smart traffic lights and AI-supported cameras, which are capable of detecting violations without the need for direct human intervention. These systems track behaviours such as using a mobile phone while driving and not wearing a seatbelt, both of which are among the leading causes of traffic-related injuries and fatalities.

Brig. Al Falahi added that the most common traffic violations in the Sultanate include speeding, running red lights, seatbelt non-compliance, and distracted driving, particularly from mobile phone use. For repeat offenders, the traffic points system is enforced, which includes penalties ranging from temporary license suspension and mandatory driving courses, to vehicle impoundment and permanent license cancellation in severe cases.
