MIAMI: Reece James broke the deadlock for Chelsea in the 64th minute, only for Benfica to draw level deep into stoppage time, courtesy of a penalty converted by Argentine star Ángel Di María in the 90+5 minute.
With the score tied at the end of regulation, the game headed into extra time — and Chelsea unleashed a late blitz. Christopher Nkunku restored Chelsea’s lead in the 108th minute, followed by two rapid-fire goals from Pedro Neto (115′) and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (117′) to seal an emphatic win.
The Blues will now face Brazilian champions Palmeiras in the quarter-finals, after they edged past Botafogo 1-0 in an all-Brazilian encounter on Saturday evening.
