NEW YORK: Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist, moved Tuesday to the brink of a stunning win in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor, with his top challenger, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, conceding the race. If elected, he would become New York’s first Muslim mayor.

“I will fight for a city that works for you, that is affordable for you, that is safe for you,” Mamdani said in his celebratory speech just after midnight.

“We can be free and we can be fed. We can demand what we deserve,” he added.
