Flight cancellations to Dubai surge from non-conflict areas amid airspace shifts and regional tensions

Flight cancellations to Dubai International Airport (DXB) are rising sharply—not just from conflict-adjacent airspaces, but also from distant hubs in South Asia and Europe—as fallout from the Iran–Israel crisis continues to ripple through global aviation networks.

DUBAI: Fresh data from Flightradar24 and FlightAware reveals a significant spike in cancelled flights to Dubai from routes outside the immediate Middle East conflict zone. The disruptions follow the closure of key airspaces over Iran, Iraq, Jordan, and Israel since June 13, which has created global detours, delays, and logistical strain on airline operations.

Airlines are grappling with mid-air congestion and extended flight times, prompting many to either reroute or cancel flights altogether—particularly when such delays affect tight aircraft rotations and crew duty hours.

A notable rise in cancellations has been recorded on inbound flights from Pakistan and India, with cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Multan showing a fourfold jump—from pre-crisis rates of around 5% to nearly 20% by June 7. European routes, too, are feeling the pressure: flights from Istanbul and other hubs have seen cancellation rates rise to 5–10%, compared to the usual 1–3%.

Although these areas lie outside the conflict zone, the knock-on effects are being felt globally. Many aircraft once routed through now-restricted skies are being diverted or grounded, reducing overall fleet availability and forcing airlines to prioritize key long-haul and high-demand services. Secondary or lower-frequency routes, especially those serving South Asia and parts of Europe, are bearing the brunt of these cuts.

With the summer travel season underway and rerouting options limited, experts caution UAE-bound travelers—especially from non-regional cities—to monitor airline updates closely and brace for potential last-minute changes.
