Geneva: The UNHCR report reveals a grim milestone in the global displacement crisis, with 122.1 million individuals forced to flee their homes due to war, persecution, and other forms of violence. This includes 32 million refugees registered with UNHCR, 6 million Palestinian refugees under the care of the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), 8 million asylum seekers, and 5.8 million people in need of international protection.

Perhaps most strikingly, 72.1 million of those displaced remain within their own countries, as internal displacement continues to rise. The report highlights that in 2024 alone, an estimated 4.7 million people were newly displaced within their national borders.

The data further points to the disproportionate burden shouldered by developing nations, which now host 71% of the world’s refugees. This has placed mounting pressure on already strained infrastructure and services, and has deepened food insecurity for millions of displaced individuals.
