WASHINGTON: In a recent update, the WHO reported an uptick in COVID-19 cases due to the emergence of the NB.1.8.1 variant, which remains under study. While the organization stressed that the new strain does not pose a greater health threat than earlier variants, it cautioned that the virus’s continued evolution could trigger fresh waves of infection.

The organization noted that the current rise aligns with the seasonal pattern of respiratory illnesses and credited existing community immunity and vaccines for keeping hospitalizations and intensive care admissions limited.

Despite the relatively manageable impact so far, the WHO has classified the global risk level as “high” and called on all countries to enhance health surveillance systems. It also urged governments to integrate COVID-19 strategies into seasonal respiratory disease plans, combat misinformation, and strengthen public awareness campaigns to promote preventive measures.
