SEOUL : With over 44 million eligible voters, the high-stakes election is set to determine the country’s future direction amid deep political divides.

The presidential race is led by liberal candidate Lee Jae-myung, who holds a commanding lead in opinion polls. His main challenger, conservative Kim Moon-soo, trails in second place, offering voters a starkly different vision for South Korea’s future.

The election comes after a period of unprecedented instability. In December, outgoing President Yoon declared martial law during a heated budget standoff, sparking public outcry and a constitutional crisis. Though parliament swiftly lifted the measure within hours, Yoon was removed from office by April, leaving a power vacuum that has persisted for months.

Polling stations will open early Tuesday morning and close in the evening. Initial projections are expected shortly after voting concludes, and the country could know its new leader by Tuesday night.
