Oman to generate 30% of power from renewables by 2030

Oman is accelerating its transition to green energy with the launch of several large-scale renewable energy projects this year.

Muscat: His Excellency Eng. Salem bin Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, announced that five to six new renewable energy projects focused on wind and solar power will begin development in 2025. With Oman’s strong wind potential, the next phase will heavily emphasize wind energy production.

The Sultanate of Oman is making significant efforts to implement green energy projects. Oman Vision 2040 aims for these projects to contribute approximately 30 percent of the total electricity generation by 2030.

Speaking to the Oman News Agency, His Excellency revealed that these projects will be located in regions where wind energy has already been assessed, primarily in the Al Wusta and Dhofar governorates. Once operational by the end of 2027, they are expected to produce over 2,000 megawatts of clean electricity.

In a major stride forward, Oman is also preparing to unveil its first renewable energy storage project. The Ministry is actively collaborating with Nama Group and the Public Services Regulatory Authority to identify optimal energy storage solutions, both traditional and innovative, to ensure stability and efficiency in renewable power usage.

His Excellency highlighted the successful launch of the Manah 1 and Manah 2 solar power plants, each expected to deliver around 500 megawatts—surpassing initial expectations. These projects are not only key contributors to Oman’s energy mix but also pave the way for industries powered by clean energy sources.

Additionally, Oman is charting a “hydrogen route” through collaboration between the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, and Oman Oil Development Company. The initiative includes setting up hydrogen production and fueling stations in concession zones to support truck transportation and drive the hydrogen economy forward.
