Muscat – “I don’t want to sound negative, but the issue lies with the one who has taken the decision to enable a particular fraud. It is the one who has decided to click or send the OTP. That is the core of the problem – when someone decides to do it, despite receiving awareness messages everyday…” replied Dr. Azwani.
Reiterating similar sentiments, Lt. Colonel Mohammed Al Kharusi, Director of Digital Services at the Royal Oman Police, said, “The issue is human error. It happens despite awareness. It may be based on a particular situation or a specific time… It cannot be resolved unless the behaviour is modified,” he added.
Replying to another question on the 35 percent rise in fraud cases, Lt. Col. Kharusi commented: “There is no statistics recorded for this year, but there is a big number and the situation could be worse with AI.”
The panelists agreed that awareness alone will not work unless human behaviour alters in tune to the changing times.
