DUBAI: According to the Ministry of Interior, a total of 28,920 drivers were fined this year for violating the law requiring motorists to stop when a school bus extends its “Stop” sign. The infraction carries a Dh1,000 fine and 10 black points on the driver’s license.
The law mandates that vehicles traveling in both directions on two-way roads must come to a complete stop at least five meters away from the school bus when the stop sign is extended.
Major Saud Al Shaiba, Director of Traffic Awareness and Media at Sharjah Police emphasized that both enforcement and education are essential to prevent tragedy.

Abu Dhabi recorded the highest number of violations, with 23,787 motorists penalized, followed by Dubai (4,990), Ajman (104), Sharjah (36), and Fujairah (3).
School bus drivers are also required to activate the stop sign during student pick-up or drop-off. Failure to do so results in a Dh500 fine and six black points. “These are not just rules, they are safeguards,” added Major Al Shaiba.
