Muscat: From AI-powered student competitions to major conferences on tourism, the Sultanate is reaffirming its commitment to preserving the past while shaping the future.

In line with the global theme set by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and its 27th General Conference in Dubai, the Sultanate of Oman has launched a series of dynamic events under the leadership of the National Museums Committee to mark International Museum Day on May 18, 2025.

At the heart of the celebration is the Frankincense Museum in Dhofar Governorate, which opened its doors to visitors free of charge and organized a series of events aimed at engaging the public. A standout initiative is the student competition titled “Omani Heritage with a Vision for the Future”, where schools across Dhofar have been invited to use artificial intelligence tools to create visual artworks that reimagine historical narratives. The winners—three schools placing in the top ranks—will be honored during the official ceremony at the museum.

Meanwhile, the Oman Across Time Museum is hosting the international conference “Museums and Their Role in Tourism Development”, a key event exploring how heritage institutions can contribute to sustainable tourism growth. The conference brings together experts, curators, and policymakers to examine the evolving role of museums as both custodians of culture and catalysts for economic development.
