RIYADH: The Royal Commission for Mecca City and the Holy Sites has announced its full readiness for the Hajj season, unveiling a development strategy that spans transportation enhancements, pedestrian comfort, and critical healthcare services.

To ease movement and crowd flow, 36,000 square metres of pedestrian paths have been widened and shaded in the central region, along with designated prayer zones to manage congestion. In Muzdalifah, a vast pedestrian path of 170,000 square metres with rubber flooring has been developed, complemented by the planting of 10,000 trees to offer shade and reduce heat stress.

Transportation upgrades are at the core of this year’s operational plan. From 15 Dhu Al Qa’dah to 30 Dhu Al Hijjah, 400 buses will run across 12 routes covering 431 stops and four major stations. The “Mecca Taxi” system has also been revamped with high-capacity zones and streamlined operations, while the electric scooter service—first introduced last year—returns on three key routes to boost light mobility.

On the healthcare front, a 200-bed hospital has been set up in Mina, supported by 71 emergency centres along major routes. Rest stations have been equipped with shaded seating and 400 operational water coolers to ensure hydration and comfort.

To further increase capacity, two-storey tent accommodations and multi-level restroom facilities have been introduced, helping optimise space and improve the overall experience for pilgrims.
