MUSCAT : As part of the initiative, the OTA will not permit import of soft drinks, energy drinks, and beverages of a special nature, starting from June 1, 2025, unless they bear the required Digital Tax Stamp (DTS).
The Sultanate is moving forward in expanding its excise tax framework first introduced in June 2019.
The distinctive tax stamp, already used on some energy and soft drinks, will now be mandatory across all excisable beverages in the third phase. The move aligns with the government’s commitment to building a transparent and sustainable taxation system while encouraging compliance and accountability in the market.
The OTA has defined “customs obligation” as the date after which excise goods within the third phase cannot be imported without the digital tax stamp, and “commercial obligation” as the date after which these goods cannot be sold within Oman without the stamp.
The third phase includes awareness workshops, field visits, and media campaigns across the targeted governorates to educate suppliers, retailers, and consumers about the new requirements and the purpose of the tax.
