MUSCAT : The centre will serve as the national hub for coordinating, planning, enhancing integration between entities, and supporting innovation and clean technologies to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
In a statement issued on the occasion, the Ministry of Energy and Minerals stated: “As part of the national drive to achieve net zero and reduce carbon emissions, the establishment of the Oman Centre for Net Zero comes as a strategic step that reflects the Sultanate of Oman’s commitment to building a sustainable future and a low-carbon economy.”
The launch of the centre marks a pivotal step in Oman’s climate action roadmap, positioning the nation as a proactive player in the global sustainability movement. It reflects the government’s strong commitment to environmental responsibility and long-term economic resilience through clean energy solutions and innovation.
Strategic objectives of the centre include developing and updating the Net Zero Strategy; providing technical and advisory support to government and private entities; monitoring the implementation of Net Zero projects and energy efficiency initiatives; and raising awareness and building national capabilities in this field.
In addition, the centre is tasked with:
• Managing carbon and hydrogen certificates, overseeing carbon trading, and maintaining a unified digital platform for tracking emissions across sectors.
• Encouraging scientific research and innovation, and supporting the development of national expertise in clean technologies.
• Overseeing the implementation of energy efficiency initiatives and updating the national plan to reduce energy consumption.
By acting as a central system for data management, policy coordination, and technological integration, the centre will help align various sectors with Oman’s net zero ambitions, ensuring efforts are unified and impactful.
