ADEN – Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak announced his resignation on Saturday through a public statement. He said he was unable to do his job properly because of challenges, including his failed attempt to reshuffle the government.
Sources say the disagreement was mainly with Rashad Al-Alimi, the head of Yemen’s presidential council. Mubarak reportedly wanted to replace 12 ministers, but Al-Alimi did not allow it.
According to government sources, Finance Minister Salem Saleh Bin Braik is expected to become the new prime minister.
Mubarak became prime minister in February 2024, after serving as foreign minister. He first gained attention in 2015, when he was kidnapped by Houthi rebels while working as a top official for then-President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

His resignation comes at a time when the United States is carrying out major airstrikes against Houthi forces. These strikes are meant to stop attacks on ships in the Red Sea and have been the largest U.S. military actions in the region since Donald Trump became president.
Yemen has been in civil war since 2014, when the Houthi group took over the capital, Sanaa, and forced the official government to move to the southern city of Aden. The Houthis now control most of the north and west of the country.
