Istanbul: The earthquake, which struck at 12:49 local time (09:49 GMT), was centered in the Marmara Sea near the Silivri district, according to Turkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Authority (AFAD). The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) recorded the quake at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles).
Though there were no immediate reports of structural damage, the tremor sent shockwaves through Istanbul—a city straddling both Europe and Asia—causing alarm among residents. The quake occurred on a public holiday, leading many people to flee buildings as they shook.
Turkish broadcaster TGRT reported one injury, involving a person who jumped from a balcony during the quake. Authorities have urged the public to stay away from damaged buildings as aftershocks remain a possibility.
