Pahalgam: The attack occurred in Baisaran near Pahalgam, which is accessible only by foot or on ponies. A group of tourists visiting the area this morning were targeted, with sources confirming that 26 civilians have died in the attack. The exact number of casualties is still being verified.

Describing the assault as “much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years,” Jammu & Kashmir’s Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed grave concern and condemned the incident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation with Union Home Minister Amit Shah soon after news of the attack emerged. The Prime Minister has directed that “suitable measures” be taken immediately to address the situation and ensure public safety.

Home Minister Shah has departed for Srinagar and is expected to chair an urgent security review meeting with all intelligence and enforcement agencies. More details are awaited as the situation unfolds.
