MUSCAT : This initiative, an annual global event organised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), aims to raise environmental awareness and promote sustainable practices in the face of global warming and climate change.

As part of the event, Oman joined millions worldwide by turning off unnecessary lights and electrical appliances, replacing them with candles. The aim was to reduce energy consumption in homes, commercial buildings, streets, and tourist and historical sites, all while ensuring public safety. The celebration also serves as a platform to raise awareness of the importance of energy conservation and environmental sustainability.

Oman has long been committed to addressing the challenges posed by climate change. The country has ratified the United Nations Convention on Climate Change and the Ozone Layer Protection Protocol, actively participating in international summits and conferences. Oman has also updated its Ozone Layer Regulation in collaboration with UN organizations, and issued legislative regulations, including the Climate Affairs Management Regulation and the Ozone Layer Regulation.

The Environment Authority is actively pursuing funding from the Green Climate Fund and other sources to support climate change adaptation projects. Ongoing efforts include the preparation of international transparency reports, the third Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and the third National Communication (NC).

Earth Hour, first launched in 2007, continues to serve as a global platform for promoting environmental action and fostering a sense of shared responsibility for the planet’s well-being.
