PAKISTAN: The verdict, delivered on Friday in a makeshift court inside Adiala Jail, marks one of the most significant corruption cases against the 72-year-old leader.
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had filed the case in December 2023 against Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi, and six others, accusing them of misappropriating £190 million (approximately PKR 50 billion) that was returned to Pakistan by the UK’s National Crime Agency. The funds, intended for the national treasury, were allegedly redirected to benefit a businessman who facilitated the establishment of a university under the Al-Qadir Trust in Jhelum.
Judge Nasir Javed Rana announced the long-awaited verdict, which had been deferred three times, most recently on January 13. The case accused Khan and Bibi, a trustee of the Al-Qadir Trust, of personal gains, including the acquisition of 458 kanals of land for the university. All other suspects, including the property tycoon at the center of the allegations, are reportedly outside the country.
