MUSCAT: The Supreme Committee is deeply concerned over the escalating number of coronavirus infected patients and death cases in the country.

As the total Covid-19 cases is nearing 50,000 in the country, the Supreme Committee expressed its discontent about the lack of commitment by people to preventive measures. There has been an exponential growth in the number of cases, particularly among the Omanis.

According to the data provided by the Ministry of Health, more than 6,000 cases have been reported among Omanis in the last seven days. The total number of death cases has also touched 224.

In a meeting held on Tuesday, the Supreme Committee headed by His Excellency Sayyid Hamoud bin Faisal Al Busaidy, Minister of Interior directed the authorities to increase the penalties including name and shame the violators.

“The Supreme Committee expresses its profound discontent about the lack of commitment to the control and prevention measures established by the competent authorities to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the community, which has contributed significantly to its transmission to their families, relatives and colleagues in the workplace, in addition to the rest of the society,” a statement from the committee said.

According to the Supreme Committee, the increase in cases has put a considerable burden in the healthcare system and urged people to follow precautionary measures to safeguard from getting infected. “The committee wishes to draw the attention of all to the fact that the spread of the disease has put considerable burden in the healthcare system, particularly intensive care units, which affects the quality of services provided by this sector, both when dealing with COVID-19 infection or other diseases,” the statement added.
