Muscat – The project, which aims to modernize and refresh the iconic structure, is expected to be complete before the 55th National Day on November 18, 2024.

Standing at 50 meters tall, the tower features four clocks and is adorned with intricate motifs and mosaic scenes depicting Oman’s rich history. The surrounding area includes landscaped lawns, tiled sections, and fountains that offer a serene environment for visitors.

Since its installation in 1991, the Ruwi Clock Tower has been a central feature of the Muscat landscape. Citizens and residents who have been around since its heydays would remember it as a popular gathering spot.

Many an evening and weekend would have been spent around the clock tower square, soaking in the warmth of familiarity it exuded. Interestingly, it also served as a hub for cultural events and film screenings.

Its prime location in the then heart of the city made it a popular haunt for people to meet up and enjoy the fluidity of the city. Being in the close vicinity of the taxi stand acted as a lure.

For the uninitiated, it would be interesting to note that it overlooks the country’s first civilian airport.

Under the supervision of Muscat Municipality, the renovation work – managed by Al Hajiry Trading Company – will witness comprehensive repairs and upgrades, including plastering, retiling of fountains, and improved lighting.

The renovations are expected to enhance the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the clock tower and its precinct, ensuring it remains a prominent symbol of Muscat’s ongoing development and heritage.
