MUSCAT : This influx of tourists contributes significantly to ecotourism and the preservation of Oman’s natural heritage.

Sultan bin Mohammed Al Balushi, Director of the Arabian Oryx Department, emphasized the sanctuary’s role as a pivotal center for wildlife conservation and eco-tourism. The sanctuary’s ongoing projects, including the ambitious plan to plant 80,000 wild trees, aim to enhance vegetation cover and rehabilitate natural habitats, thereby sustaining local ecosystems. Efforts are also underway to upgrade the reserve’s infrastructure to further attract and educate visitors.

The Arabian Oryx Sanctuary spans 2,824 square kilometers and is home to around 900 Arabian Oryx, 1,240 sand gazelles, 160 Arabian gazelles, as well as Nubian ibex, sand foxes, striped hyenas, wild rabbits, and honey badgers. This diverse range of wildlife enriches the visitor experience and deepens their understanding of Oman’s natural heritage.

Al Balushi highlighted the sanctuary’s commitment to educational outreach, noting its mini-exhibition that features photographs and brochures about the reserve’s history and development. This exhibition provides insights into the region’s geological and cultural background, linking it to the local community.
Advanced technologies are employed at the sanctuary, including the use of tracking collars to monitor herds of Arabian oryx, gazelles, and their migration patterns. Last April, the release of 50 sand gazelles into the reserve further supported biodiversity and ecological balance in the region.

The Arabian Oryx Sanctuary continues to play a vital role in promoting environmental awareness and supporting sustainable tourism in Oman.
