MUSCAT : The DGCA imposed a financial penalty of ₹90 lakh on Air India Limited following the airline’s decision to operate a flight with a non-trainer line captain paired with a non-line-released first officer. This breach of protocol has been deemed a severe scheduling incident by the regulator, with significant safety ramifications.
The fallout didn’t stop there. Air India’s Director of Operations and Director of Training were also fined ₹6 lakh and ₹3 lakh, respectively. Additionally, the pilot involved received a stern warning to exercise greater caution in the future to prevent such incidents from occurring again.
The issue was flagged through a voluntary report submitted by Air India on July 10, 2024. The DGCA launched a comprehensive investigation, including document reviews and a spot check of Air India’s Scheduling Facility. The probe revealed multiple violations of regulatory provisions, uncovering deficiencies that posed serious safety risks.

In response to show cause notices issued on July 22, 2024, the concerned individuals failed to provide satisfactory explanations, prompting the DGCA to enforce stringent penalties as per the existing rules and regulations.
