MUSCAT : The fisheries sector in the Wilayat of Jalan Bani Bu Hassan, a cornerstone of South Al Sharqiyah’s economy, plays a crucial role in boosting food security, thanks to its prime location along the Arabian Sea. Recognizing the importance of protecting kingfish stocks, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has implemented a strict regulation banning the fishing of kingfish during their fertilization and reproduction seasons, from August 15 to October 15 each year.

Salem bin Sultan Al Arimi, Director of the Department of Agricultural Wealth, Fisheries and Water Resources in Jalan Bani Bu Hassan, highlighted that the decision is a strategic move to prevent overfishing and maintain a balance between fish stocks and catch quantities. The regulation also prohibits the possession, trading, and handling of kingfish during the ban period, ensuring that the species is given ample time to replenish.
Kingfish, also known as Kanaad, is a staple on Omani tables and a favourite across the Gulf for its nutritional value. It is part of the Scombridae family, akin to tuna, and is known for its migratory patterns along Oman’s coasts. In 2023, artisanal fishing yielded 12,000 tons of kingfish, a significant increase from 5,000 tons in 2022, bringing substantial economic value to local fishermen.

Al Arimi noted that the Ministry is dedicated to the development of the fisheries sector, with projects that enhance production and export opportunities, benefiting over 2,343 Omani fishermen and supporting the local economy. With 861 fishing boats, 241 transporter licenses, and 27 fish sales outlets in the Wilayat, the sector is a lifeline for the community, now further strengthened by sustainable practices.
