MUSCAT : The Vision Palm project, supervised by the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation, leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to detect palm leaf infections early and assess the quality of dates.

Yusra bint Rashid Al Farsi, a member of the Vision Palm team, highlighted the project’s pivotal role in enhancing the agricultural sector in Oman. She emphasized that the goal is to empower farmers by providing them with a tool that improves the efficiency of agricultural production and aligns with the national strategy to promote palm cultivation and sustainable economic growth.

The AI-powered application is designed to be user-friendly and accessible via mobile phones. Farmers can simply upload an image of the affected palm leaf, and the AI swiftly analyzes it, providing immediate results. This early detection is crucial, offering farmers a chance to intervene before diseases spread, thereby safeguarding their crops and boosting the quality of their dates.

Al Farsi emphasized the broader economic impact, noting that this technology could significantly enhance the export potential of Omani dates, ensuring that only the highest quality dates reach the market to improve the image of Omani products globally and increase revenues.

The project’s benefits extend beyond individual farmers to the national economy. Vision Palm contributes to economic stability and environmental sustainability by protecting palm groves and promoting high-quality exports. The system also paves the way for regional cooperation in smart agriculture, positioning Oman as a leader in agricultural innovation.

To maximize the system’s impact, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources will organize training and workshops, ensuring that farmers are well-equipped to utilize this technology.
