MUSCAT : Overseen by the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research, and Innovation, the project focuses on addressing the issue of wax buildup in pipelines that transport crude oil, with the goal of enhancing sustainability and reducing carbon emissions.

Led by CEO Alwaleed bin Yousef Al-Maharbi, the project utilizes ultrasound waves, a method already used in various oil and gas sectors, to develop a more effective and eco-friendly solution for eliminating wax deposits. Wax buildup can impair pipeline efficiency and increase maintenance costs, presenting a significant challenge for oil companies.

The proposed technology uses high-frequency ultrasound to generate vibrations within the crude oil, causing bubbles to form and subsequently burst in a process known as cavitation. This process breaks down heavy wax molecules into smaller, lighter ones, preventing further deposition and enhancing pipeline efficiency.

Al-Maharbi highlighted that this approach is more environmentally friendly compared to traditional methods, which often rely on chemicals and consume significant energy. The use of ultrasound minimizes the negative environmental impacts associated with these conventional techniques and promotes the adoption of sustainable practices in the oil industry.

The project’s effectiveness has been evaluated through simulations and a test platform designed to replicate real conditions. Ongoing experiments are assessing the impact of the ultrasound treatment on wax deposition rates in crude oil samples.

By reducing reliance on chemicals and electrical heating, the technology promises to cut energy consumption, lower costs, and improve production efficiency. The project is poised to bring substantial benefits to the oil and gas sector, advancing the use of green technologies and supporting sustainability efforts in the industry.
