Muscat: The Ministry of Health in Oman is alerting the public to the dangers of Black Widow spiders (Latrodectus), notorious for their distinctive body shape and potent venom. Several specimens have recently been collected in different areas across the Sultanate, raising concerns about public safety.
Black Widow spiders are typically identified by their black bodies with red, orange, or brownish stripes on their characteristic globular abdomens, though some may lack these coloured markings. These spiders are commonly found around houses, gardens, sheds, and barns.
If bitten by a Black Widow spider, individuals may experience severe pain, sweating at the bite site, and muscular weakness. Other symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, and painful abdominal cramps, though systemic effects are rare.

The Ministry advises the following steps if bitten:
Do not panic.
Apply ice packs to the bite area.
Visit the nearest healthcare facility immediately.
Do not attempt to catch the spider.
Residents who spot a Black Widow spider are urged to contact the Directorate General of Muscat Municipality at (1111) for further inspection and assistance.
