MUSCAT : Dr. Alia bint Mohammed Al Mughairy, Consultant in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology and head of the medical team, described the treatment as the first of its kind globally. The patient showed rapid and significant improvement in platelet, red blood cell, and white blood cell counts without any reported side effects.

Romiplostim, a synthetic protein known for stimulating platelet production, is typically used to treat thrombocytopenia in children with immune disorders or as a result of radiation or chemotherapy for solid tumors. This case marks its unprecedented application in treating bone marrow failure associated with Down syndrome.

The successful treatment has been documented in the prestigious ‘Journal of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology’, following rigorous peer review by international experts in pediatric oncology. Dr. Al Mughairy emphasized that bone marrow failure is a severe condition leading to decreased blood cell production, requiring intensive medical management including transfusions.

The achievement underscores the expertise of Oman’s pediatric hematology team and their dedication to pioneering treatments for complex medical conditions.
