New York – This declaration was made by First Secretary Mohammed bin Ali Al Shehhi, member of Oman’s permanent delegation to the United Nations, during the United Nations General Assembly’s discussion of the ‘Security Council Report’ in New York City.

The Sultanate expressed regret over the Security Council’s failure to pass a resolution that would grant Palestine its legitimate right to United Nations membership. This failure, Oman noted, contradicts the international consensus on the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and obstructs efforts aimed at establishing justice and peace worldwide.

Oman called on all Security Council members to give the Palestinian issue the full and fair attention it deserves, applying fair standards to everyone without exception. Respect for international law and United Nations resolutions is essential to ensuring security, stability, and peace in the region and globally.
Joining other nations, Oman also called for a review of the Security Council’s working mechanisms, particularly concerning the use of the veto. The Sultanate advocated for responsible and legal use of the veto, aligning with the United Nations’ goals of upholding international law and humanitarian principles, thus preserving the legitimacy and credibility of this significant international body.

Oman welcomed the Security Council’s resolution supporting a comprehensive and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and urged all parties to take serious steps towards its immediate implementation. Additionally, the Sultanate called on the international community to enforce this resolution and hold Israel accountable to halt its aggression against Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories. These measures are seen as critical to achieving the two-state solution and establishing an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, thereby supporting peace and stability in the region.
