Muscat – The case stemmed from a complaint filed by a consumer with the Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) in Al Dakhiliya Governorate. The consumer alleged that they had entered into a contract with the establishment to build a kitchen according to specific requirements and paid the agreed-upon down payment. However, the establishment failed to complete the work within the stipulated timeframe and repeatedly delayed its completion and delivery.
Following the consumer’s complaint, the Department of Consumer Protection took necessary measures and forwarded the case to the Public Prosecution. After completing investigations, the Public Prosecution referred the case to the competent court.
The court found two representatives of the commercial establishment guilty of the misdemeanor of failing to comply with the service agreement. The court sentenced the first defendant to one month of imprisonment and imposed a fine on the second defendant. Additionally, the court ordered both defendants to jointly refund the consumer RO 2800 and cover legal expenses.
The Consumer Protection Authority commended the court’s decision and urged all businesses to adhere to the Consumer Protection Law and its regulations, as well as decisions issued by the CPA. The authority further emphasized the importance of transparency, credibility, and avoiding misleading or false advertising when promoting goods and services to consumers.
