Muscat – The family alleges that flight cancellations by the airline prevented Rajesh’s wife, Amrita, from reaching his bedside in time.

Rajesh, who worked as IT Manager at the Indian School Wadi Kabir, passed away on May 13 due to cardiac arrest. Amrita was desperately trying to reach Oman to be with her ailing husband, but her efforts were thwarted by Air India Express cancelling flights.

The family claims that Rajesh’s death could have been prevented if Amrita had been able to travel to Oman. They have condemned the airline’s response, calling it ‘callous and irresponsible’.
The family’s plight has garnered significant support in Kerala. Several political leaders have intervened on their behalf, and the Kerala government has even approached the central government seeking compensation for the family.

Kerala General Education Minister V Sivankutty wrote a letter to the Civil Aviation Minister highlighting the ‘unfortunate incident’ and criticizing Air India Express’ actions. He urged them to provide monetary compensation to the family for their loss.

After Rajesh’s body was brought to Kerala on May 16, the family took it directly to the Air India SATS Airport Services Pvt Limited (AISATS) office, which provides various airport services. Following discussions between AI Express officials, the family, and the police, the protest was called off, and the body was taken home for the last rites.

However, Air India Express, while acknowledging the tragic loss, has denied responsibility for Rajesh’s death. They cite ‘extraordinary circumstances’ for the flight cancellations and claim they are not liable for compensation. However, they have offered to discuss ‘compassionate support’ with the family.
The family remains unsatisfied with the airline’s response and has decided to pursue legal action against them.
