KUWAIT CITY: Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah on Wednesday ordered authorities to probe the massive fire at an apartment building housing foreign workers, and vowed to hold accountable those responsible for the tragedy that killed at least 49 people.

The six-storey building housing labourers in southern Kuwait killed 49 people and left several injured. According to local media, the fire began early on Wednesday and swept through the six-floor building filled with workers in the Mangaf district.

According to the report, the Emir directed officials to immediately follow up to find out the causes of the fire outbreak and hold those responsible for “its occurrence accountable so that such an unfortunate incident will not be repeated in the future.”

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Sheikh Fahad Yusuf Saud Al-Sabah accused real estate owners of violations and greed. He also ordered the immediate arrest of the building owner and the guard.
