TEHRAN: Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will assume powers as interim president of Iran after Ebrahim Raisi died in a helicopter crash on Sunday.
In a statement issued, sate-owned news agency IRNA said Mokhber got the approval of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in accordance with Article 131 of the Iranian Constitution.
According to the Iranian Constitution, in case of the president’s death or incapacity, the first vice president will take over until an election is held within a maximum period of 50 days.

Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi and foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian died after the helicopter they were travelling crashed in a mountainous area in the northwest of Iran.
