Muscat – The project involved dumping out-of-service military equipment in the marine environment to create an optimal environment for the growth of coral reefs and the proliferation of marine organisms.
The primary objective of the project is to restore and expand coral reef areas, compensating for losses incurred due to both natural phenomena and human activities. By establishing a new ecosystem that mirrors natural coral reefs, the initiative aims to attract a diverse array of marine life, thereby enhancing biodiversity within the reserve.
Besides, the project is poised to bolster eco-tourism efforts by offering a unique and engaging attraction for tourists and diving enthusiasts. This innovative endeavor not only supports the broader tourism sector in Oman but also alleviates pressure on natural coral reef sites within the Daymaniyat Islands Natural Reserve.
This project comes within the efforts of the Environment Authority to preserve and rehabilitate the marine environment, as it constitutes a large part of the Omani environment and is directly linked to people in Oman. It is also considered a major indicator for evaluating the performance of the country’s environmental indicators.
It is noteworthy that through the coordination with the Ministry of Defense the Authority was provided with 8 vehicles.
The project site, strategically located near the Daymaniyat Islands, was selected for its proximity to existing natural coral reefs, facilitating the rapid growth and colonization of coral and marine organisms.
