Muscat: In a recent development, US President Joe Biden signed legislation aimed at either banning or compelling a sale of the popular Chinese app TikTok. Citing national security threats linked to ByteDance, Congress members supported the move, echoing concerns about data sharing with Beijing.
This isn’t TikTok’s first encounter with bans. India, in June 2020, banned TikTok and other Chinese apps due to privacy and sovereignty apprehensions following a border clash. Nikhil Pahwa, a digital policy expert, highlighted India’s decisive stance against Chinese apps, resulting in over 500 bans.
Contrastingly, the US ban faces hurdles due to legal complexities and TikTok’s substantial revenue market.

In India, the ban was swift and permanent by January 2021. US legal battles make it a far more tedious process, noted Pahwa, citing America’s robust First Amendment and market complexities.
