MALAYSIA: This move by QSR Brands (M) Holdings Bhd, which operates KFC in Malaysia, comes amid heightened tensions and consumer activism.

The decision to temporarily close KFC outlets in Malaysia, a majority-Muslim nation that strongly supports the Palestinian cause, follows media reports linking the closures to boycotts over the fast food chain’s perceived associations with Israel. Although QSR Brands cited “challenging economic conditions” as the primary reason for the closures, it did not directly address the boycott concerns raised by local media.

In a statement released late on Monday, QSR Brands emphasized that the closures were part of proactive measures to manage rising business costs and to focus on areas with higher customer engagement. The company also mentioned that affected employees were given the option to relocate to outlets in zones with increased customer traffic.

While the exact number of affected stores was not specified, local media reports indicated that over 100 KFC outlets were temporarily shut down. This move reflects the complex interplay between economic pressures, geopolitical sensitivities, and consumer activism that businesses like KFC Malaysia are navigating today’s global landscape.
