MUSCAT: Foreign workers in Oman send home nearly $10 billion in remittances in 2018 despite a significant drop in population, according to the latest official figures released by World Bank revealed.
According to the World Bank, in 2017, $9.815 billion expat workers send home $9.815 billion in remittances, while the figure has increased in 2018 to touch $9.958 billion.
However, expats in Oman now make up 42.5 percent (1,987,456) of the country’s total population marking the lowest percentage since November 2018, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information. In November 2018, the number stood at 1,996,190. The decrease comes as Oman continues its efforts to nationalize its workforce, hiring more Omanis in both private and public sector jobs than foreign nationals.
