Maharashtra: High-level discussions are underway between Tesla and Reliance Industries, centred around a joint venture that would facilitate the construction of a manufacturing facility in India. Tesla’s proposed investment in these operations stands at an impressive $2 billion, signalling the company’s commitment to the Indian market.
Tesla’s search for a suitable location has led it to consider multiple states, including Gujarat and Maharashtra, for the establishment of its manufacturing plant. Sources suggest that due to its advantageous port facilities, Maharashtra could emerge as the favoured destination for Tesla’s venture.
In a recent X Spaces session featuring Nicolai Tangen, CEO of Norges Bank Investment Management, Elon Musk, the visionary CEO of Tesla, expressed enthusiasm about India’s potential as a key market for electric vehicles. He affirmed Tesla’s intention to introduce its cutting-edge electric vehicles to Indian consumers, aligning with global trends towards sustainable transportation.

As part of its strategic planning, Tesla’s senior officials are expected to visit India soon to finalize the plant’s location and solidify the joint venture agreement with Reliance Industries. However, it’s worth noting that Tesla’s discussions with Reliance aren’t exclusive, leaving room for collaborating with other domestic partners if needed.
The Indian government’s recent approval of a new electric vehicle scheme, coupled with favourable tax reliefs, aims to position India as a prominent hub for electric vehicle manufacturing. This policy landscape further supports Tesla’s ambitions to establish a robust presence in the country’s burgeoning electric vehicle market.
Maharashtra and Gujarat have reportedly presented enticing land proposals to Tesla, vying to host the company’s electric vehicle manufacturing facility. Reports indicate that concurrent talks with the Telangana government are underway, underscoring the widespread interest and competition among Indian states to attract Tesla’s investments.
In addition to domestic production, Tesla’s facility in Germany has commenced the production of right-hand drive vehicles, which are earmarked for export to India later this year. This development underscores Tesla’s swift progress towards making inroads into India, the world’s third-largest automotive market.
Though currently modest, India’s electric vehicle market is experiencing steady growth, with electric models accounting for 2% of total car sales in 2023. The government’s ambitious goal to increase this figure to 30% by 2030 presents a promising landscape for automakers like Tesla to thrive in India’s evolving automotive sector.
