Sugarcane harvest begins in Oman’s Al Dakhiliyah Governorate

Farmers in the Wilayat of Manah, in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, have begun the harvest of this year's sugarcane crop, a vital agricultural commodity that contributes significantly to food security and economic prosperity in the region

Muscat – Sugarcane cultivation holds a special significance in Manah, serving as a cornerstone of the region’s agricultural landscape and contributing to its economic vitality.

Mohammed Bin Harib Al Bahlani, Director of the Department of Agricultural Wealth and Water Resources in the Wilayat of Manah, emphasized the economic importance of sugarcane cultivation for local farmers. He noted that sugarcane enjoys widespread demand across Omani society, particularly from the owners of Omani sweet factories.


He explained that sugarcane cultivation in Manah this year spans approximately 15 acres, with an anticipated production of 9 tons from 61 farms, compared to last year when the production reached 7 tons. He further pointed out that sugarcane cultivation typically occurs between February and March each year, with agricultural technicians from the Department of Agricultural Wealth and Water Resources providing ongoing support to farmers throughout the cultivation process.

From land preparation to irrigation and pest management, farmers receive comprehensive guidance to ensure optimal crop yields and quality.

Yakzan bin Khalaf Al Masrouri, owner of a sugarcane press in the Wilayat of Manah, highlighted the efficiency and productivity of the local sugarcane industry. He noted the seamless operation of the press, equipped with modern machinery and staffed by skilled Omani workers, facilitating the processing of sugarcane from harvest to extraction.
