Muscat: Omanis started to queue up in polling stations across the country from early morning on Sunday to cast their votes, as the stage is set for the biggest election process in the country.
The number of voters with activated electoral cards stood at 713,335. They are choosing from 637 candidates who are vying for 86 seats in the Majlis Al Shura, according to the Ministry of Interior.
597 men and 40 females will fight for the in the ninth Majlis Al Shura election. According to information received here, the election began at 7am and will conclude at 7pm. The results are expected to arrive by midnight.

From morning 375, 801 men and 337, 534 women in all the governorates and wilayats started to queue up to cast their e-vote to choose their representative in the 9th session of the Majlis Al Shura.
The introduction of electronic voting on touch screens is the highlight of this year’s elections. The electronic system aims to ensure the voting was conducted confidentially and with integrity.
No cash for vote
Criminal action would be initiated against those distributing gifts in the form of cash or kind to people with an aim of inducing them to vote in favour of a particular candidate, said Oman’s Public Prosecution in a statement issued on Friday.
Those indulging in such activities could be punished with three-year imprisonment and imposed a fine of OMR 3,000.
“The penalty shall also apply to anyone who mediates, facilitates or incites to do so,” the statement from Public Prosecution added.
