Muscat – The WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer has released data in its Global Cancer Report 2022, shedding light on the world’s profound challenges in combating the escalating cancer burden. The report underscores the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to tackle the root causes and mitigate the projected increase in cancer cases.

According to the data, the five most common cancer types globally in 2022 were breast cancer (23.8%), lung cancer (9.4%), colorectal cancer (8.9%), thyroid cancer (6.4%), and cervix uteri cancer (6.8%). In 2050, these numbers are expected to witness a significant surge, with lung cancer projected to increase to 15.3%, breast cancer to 23.8%, colorectal cancer to 10.4%, thyroid cancer to 6.4%, and cervix uteri cancer to 6.8%.

The demographic shifts and lifestyle choices contributing to this alarming trend are multi-faceted. As populations grow and age, the incidence of cancer is naturally expected to rise. However, the exacerbating influence of risk factors such as tobacco use, obesity, and air pollution cannot be overstated.
