NEW DELHI – India’s sporting fraternity rejoiced as the Arjuna Awards recognized and honoured the exceptional prowess and dedication of 17 distinguished athletes. The stars bestowed this prestigious honour were renowned names like Mohammed Shami, Ojas Pravin Deotale, Sheetal Devi, Aditi Gopichand Swami, and Antim Panghal.

Mohammed Shami, the illustrious cricketer known for his exceptional bowling, emerged as the leading wicket-taker in India’s ICC Cricket World Cup last year, claiming 24 crucial wickets and shattering several records.

Shami expressed his joy before the ceremony, saying, “This award is a dream. Life passes by, and many struggle to achieve it. I am grateful for this nomination. Receiving this award is a dream come true, witnessing many deserving individuals honoured over the years.”

Para-archer Sheetal Devi Aditi Swami showcased exemplary talent by securing three medals at the Para Asian Games, including a women’s team silver, a mixed team gold, and a gold in the women’s singles compound open event. Her gripping victory against Singapore’s Alim Nur Syahidah in the singles event, marked by a spectacular performance, secured the gold for Sheetal.

Archer Ojas Pravin Deotale exhibited sheer brilliance by claiming two gold medals. In the men’s compound archery final, Ojas triumphed over Abhishek Verma, securing the gold with a remarkable score. Adding to his glory, Ojas, alongside Jyothi Surekha, clinched another gold in the mixed team compound archery event by defeating South Korea’s Chaewon So and Jaehoon Joo.

The list of Arjuna Awardees encompasses a diverse array of athletes, each a maestro in their respective fields. From the blind cricket captain Ajay Reddy to the talented equestrians Divyakriti Singh and Anush Agarwalla, these awards acknowledge their extraordinary dedication and contribution to Indian sports.
