MUSCAT – The submission follows on from a resolution passed by the United Nations General Assembly on December 30th, 2022, requesting the ICJ issue an advisory opinion on the implications of Israel’s continued violations of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.

In the pleading, the Sultanate of Oman underscores the importance of the international community assuming its responsibility to stop Israeli settlements and its plans to annex parts of the occupied Palestinian lands. It stresses the need to preserve the historical, legal and religious status of the occupied city of Jerusalem. It also asserts the importance of Palestine obtaining the status of a fully-fledged member state at the United Nations.

The submission confirms Oman’s firm position in support of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital – to be based on the borders of June 4th 1967.

Oman’s position remains that this would be in accordance with Security Council resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative, respecting the principle of land for peace and the principle of a two state solution. It would follow the rules and principles of international law and support the diplomatic and legal action led by the State of Palestine to preserve the rights of the Palestinian people and protect them from crimes committed by the Israeli occupation authority.
