World Cup qualifier: Oman’s Aqib, Ayaan reach ODI milestones

Both Aqib and Ayaan join Jatinder Singh (1,220) and Zeeshan Maqsood (1,127) in the exclusive club of Oman batters who have scored 1,000 or more ODI runs

MUSCAT: During the ICC World Cup Qualifier, there were individual milestones achieved by Oman cricketers with vice-captain Aqib Ilyas becoming the fastest Associate batter to reach 1,000 ODI runs. 

He achieved the feat during the Super Six match against the Netherlands on July 3 in which he was also captaining the team. Aqib is also the tenth fastest in the world with Pakistan’s Fakhar Zaman the quickest to reach in 18 innings. Aqib reached 1,000 runs in just 22 innings.

Ayaan Khan, who had a very productive Qualifier, also achieved the milestone of reaching 1,000 runs in ODI during the Super Six match against West Indies. He reached the mark in 31 innings.

In the Qualifier, Ayaan also hit his maiden century during the Super Six match against the Netherlands. The other centurion for Oman in the Qualifier was Kashyap Prajapati with his century against Zimbabwe, his second ODI ton.

Ayaan was Oman’s highest run scorer with 315 runs in Zimbabwe with a healthy average of 52.50. Prajapati was second with 250 runs and followed by Shoaib Khan with 214.

Pace spearhead Bilal Khan picked up a total of 14 wickets in the Qualifier with a five-wicket haul against Scotland to be among the leading wicket-takers of the tournament. Fayyaz Butt was the next best with a total haul of 11 wickets.
