MUSCAT : The assembly is being held under the theme “Enhancing good governance and empowering communities through inclusivity, trust and opportunities for all”, with parliamentarians discussing issues including governance, community participation, international peace and security, sustainable development, democracy and human rights.

During a meeting of the IPU’s Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights, Honourable Dr Shamsa Masoud Nasser Al Sheibani, a member of the State Council, stressed Oman’s support for efforts to uphold human dignity and promote peace, justice, equality and fundamental rights and freedoms.

Honourable Dr Al Sheibani said human beings are at the centre of development, an approach reflected in Oman Vision 2040 and its focus on people and society.

She emphasised the need to move beyond discussions on human rights towards tangible improvements in people’s lives, calling for recommendations to be translated into practical and measurable programmes that strengthen child protection, promote equal opportunities, safeguard workers’ rights, empower people with disabilities and enable young people to participate in shaping their future.

She also stressed the importance of dialogue, understanding and international cooperation in addressing challenges and advancing peace and stability.

The State Council delegation is also participating in meetings of the IPU Governing Council, which address the Union’s activities, organisational and administrative matters, electoral issues and ways to strengthen cooperation among member parliaments. The 153rd Assembly brings together the IPU’s statutory bodies, including the Governing Council and standing committees.

The Omani delegation is also taking part in meetings of the Association of Secretaries General of Parliaments, which provide a platform for exchanging experiences and practices in managing parliamentary institutions, developing working methods and strengthening cooperation between parliamentary bodies and services.

The State Council delegation includes Honourable Khalid Bin Ahmed Bin Said Al Saadi, Secretary-General of the State Council, and Honourable Dr Aisha Said Mohammed Al Ghabshi, a member of the State Council. The State Council’s official website confirms the current titles and names of the officials.

The participation reflects the State Council’s efforts to strengthen Oman’s presence in international parliamentary forums, exchange expertise and learn from parliamentary and legislative best practices.
