Muscat: Oman has won the right to host the 23rd World Wind Energy Congress 2027, reinforcing its growing position in the global renewable energy sector and its ambitions to expand wind power projects and diversify the national energy mix.

The congress will be hosted by Nama Power and Water Procurement Company under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, in cooperation with the World Wind Energy Association.

The international event will bring together policymakers, industry leaders, investors, developers, researchers, technology providers and renewable energy experts to discuss the future of wind power, emerging technologies, investment opportunities and international cooperation.

H.E. Mohsen bin Hamad Al Hadhrami, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, said Oman’s selection to host the congress reflects international confidence in the country’s renewable energy strategy and the progress achieved under Oman Vision 2040.

He said the Ministry is working to build a more diversified and flexible energy mix, strengthen energy security and create a regulatory and investment environment that supports the expansion of renewable energy projects.

According to H.E., Oman’s renewable energy roadmap until 2032 includes around 19 projects and project packages, comprising 13 solar energy developments and six wind energy projects.

Planned wind power capacity alone is expected to exceed 4,000MW, highlighting the scale of Oman’s intended expansion over the coming years.

H.E. Al Hadhrami said the strategy goes beyond adding electricity generation capacity and is designed to build an integrated renewable energy ecosystem capable of attracting investments and technologies, developing local value chains, improving infrastructure readiness and strengthening national skills and capabilities.

He added that hosting the congress would provide Oman with an international platform for knowledge exchange, technology transfer, innovation and partnerships that could accelerate the growth of wind and renewable energy projects.

H.E. Maitha bint Saif Al Mahrouqi, Oman’s Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany, said the decision reflected the confidence placed in Oman by the World Wind Energy Association and its partners.

She said Oman’s stability, transparent regulatory environment and investment-friendly framework had strengthened its position as a reliable partner for international cooperation and renewable energy development.

H.E. Al Mahrouqi noted that Oman possesses significant wind energy potential alongside its large-scale expansion of solar power, helping the country build a more diversified and resilient energy mix.

She also highlighted Oman’s strategic position connecting the Gulf region with East Africa, South Asia and Europe, creating opportunities to link international capital, technology and investment with renewable energy projects.

Ahmed bin Salem Al Abri, CEO of Nama Power and Water Procurement Company, said Oman’s successful bid represented international recognition of the progress it had made in renewable energy under Oman Vision 2040 and its net-zero ambitions.

He said Nama prepared Oman’s hosting bid under the supervision of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, with the country’s strategic location, advanced infrastructure, attractive investment environment and wind resources strengthening its case.

Al Abri identified Dhofar and Al Wusta as particularly promising areas for utility-scale wind energy projects, offering opportunities for international developers, investors and technology providers.

He said the congress would allow Oman to showcase these opportunities while promoting international cooperation and accelerating the development of renewable energy projects.

Dr. Irfan Mirza, President of the World Wind Energy Association, welcomed Oman’s selection as host, saying the country would provide an ideal platform to bring together governments, industry, investors, experts and communities from around the world.

He said the association looked forward to working with the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, Nama Power and Water Procurement Company and other partners to make the 2027 congress a global platform for building partnerships and accelerating wind energy deployment.

Stefan Gsanger, Secretary General of the World Wind Energy Association, praised Oman’s plans to expand renewable and wind energy capacity.

He said the 2027 congress would build on the legacy of the previous 22 editions and mark the first time the global wind energy community gathers in the Arabian Gulf region.
