Muscat: The Ministry of Agricultural Wealth, Fisheries and Water Resources and the Omani Agricultural Association have reviewed ways to enhance support for farmers and address key challenges affecting agricultural production and marketing across the Sultanate of Oman.

The discussions were held during the second periodic meeting at the Ministry building and were chaired by His Excellency Dr. Saud bin Hamoud Al Habsi, Minister of Agricultural Wealth, Fisheries and Water Resources.

The meeting focused on strengthening joint cooperation between the Ministry and the Association, particularly in identifying farmers’ needs and ensuring that their concerns and observations are conveyed directly to the relevant authorities.

Officials discussed ways to create a more suitable environment for farmers to market their agricultural products, while also identifying difficulties faced at different stages of production and distribution.

The two sides also explored cooperation mechanisms aimed at supporting locally produced agricultural goods and improving their access to markets, a move expected to contribute to the sustainability of agricultural activity and improve economic returns for farmers.

The meeting further reviewed measures to improve farm performance through the use of alternative energy, as well as the role that small and medium-sized enterprises can play in providing services and support to farmers.

The talks formed part of continued efforts to strengthen the partnership between the Ministry and the Omani Agricultural Association and to follow up on challenges facing farmers across various governorates.

They also built on outcomes from an earlier meeting, with officials reviewing progress made on proposed solutions and measures aimed at overcoming difficulties within the sector.

It also highlighted the importance of involving farmers in decision-making related to the sector through a participatory approach that takes into account current needs and the requirements of the next stage of agricultural development in Oman.
